Southern Appalachia comprises roughly 1,400 square miles of rugged, ancient mountains that run diagonally across eight different states. If you were to draw a state line around the southern Highlands it would form the 8th largest state in the nation. There is no signage, boundary or survey delineating what is, isn't or would be the State of Appalachia. All of that is unnecessary, more of a feeling and understanding for those who call these mountains home. For those who feel most at ease in the rhodos and ridges, peaks and hollers, creeks and crags. For the ones whose favorite swimming hole is so cold and pretty it’ll take your breath away in late July. For yall who say Apple-atcha and dig ramps because they’re great to sauté and fun to ride over.

Folks who have spent enough time here know that those invisible state lines that wind through the region don’t hold nearly as much sway as that point where the mountains end and flat land begins. Things just aint as great once the roads run straight. From sandstone ridges to granite peaks, from Panther Lick to Pappaws Place, this flag's for you.
